Breast milk banks help pre-term babies...

No donation can be more divine than human milk and only a lactating mother can make this donation. So, if you are a lactating mother do come forward to make the breast milk donation at one of the milk banks in India listed in the 'Whom Can You Contact?' section below.

Only your surplus milk will be taken and that too is beneficial for you because frequent expression of milk helps maintain lactation. Donor mothers need to be healthy and free from Hepatitis, HIV and VDRL.

 

Mothers’ milk banks feed the donated breast milk to babies whose mothers do not lactate or pre-term babies whose mothers are unable to nurse their babies. Pre-term babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) would have far greater chances of survival if they are given human milk.

Similar is the situation with babies who are under-weight, malnourished or orphaned at childbirth. Breast milk contains vital nutrients and immunity properties which protect baby from different diseases. It is far superior to formula feed which would be the other less-preferred option.

 

How does milk banking system function?

Breast milk is expressed or pumped by the mother herself in the comfort of her house using a sanitised pump lent by the milk bank. The expressed milk is stored in sterile containers provided by the milk bank, in the freezer at home. The milk bank collects the frozen milk and transports it safely to their premises on a regular basis.

 

The milk is pasteurised, stored at a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius and is usable up to 6 months. Banked breast milk has a potential to save over 1,50,000 premature babies a year in India. Every lactating mother is urged to come forward to sign-up at a milk bank, if there is one in her city. Your noble deed will help needy newborns to grow, gain weight and reduce death rates among babies.
