Wish to donate old and used clothes to the needy
Many among India’s poor and underprivileged are short of adequate clothing. Clothes donation not only make their lives better but also promote the eco-friendly concept of recycling.
In our urban homes, we have clothes that do not fit us anymore. As children grow up, they outgrow their clothes every year. So instead of storing the
old clothes or throwing them away, donate used clothes because what is waste for you could be a resource for the less fortunate.
Places to donate old clothes are many in India. You may donate old clothes to charities directly or you may hand-over the donation to an intermediary organization. Both kinds of organizations and institutions are listed under 'Whom You Can Contact?' below.
Your donated clothes reach the needy through NGOs…
Clothing donations received at intermediary organizations are sorted out and mended by sewing, if need be. Tattered or torn used clothes are processed to make sanitary pads or socks.
Clothes fit for use are packed and transported for distribution to rural poor and urban slum-dwellers or to organizations and NGOs running residential schools for the underprivileged, orphanages, old-age homes, children's homes, shelters etc.
Collection methods vary widely and are dependent on every organization’s resources. Some organizations have arrangements in place for clothing donation pickup from homes and offices. Some have set up drop-off points in cities where the used clothing can be left.
It is also true that many institutions lack the means to collect used clothing and request that the old clothes may be delivered at the institution’s location. In such cases, donors located in the same city as the organization can do the needful.
