Used book donations help in promoting the reading habit...
Be it for learning new things or for entertainment, reading is a great pastime. But after reading a book, rarely we will refer to it again. Gradually, the books are stowed away in some corner of the home or they pile up in cupboards, desks, shelves and gather dust. In due course, the neighbourhood ‘raddiwala’ is called and he pays next to nothing to take the books away.
Isn’t there a better way to spread the reading habit and motivate people to read? Of course, there is and that is to donate old books. The book that you donated could be read over a period of time by a few hundred people who have the desire to read but lack resources to buy books. The fact that knowledge is being spread should give enormous satisfaction to book donors.
Donate books to NGOs for their literacy classes, libraries...
NGOs have been active in seeking to inculcate reading culture among adults and children from underprivileged communities in India. Efforts are underway to improve language proficiency and basic reading skills. NGOs house the book donations in formal or informal centres or community libraries in slums.
You may donate a book to someone known to you in the neighbourhood and if possible, to an underprivileged person or a youngster. You can participate in book donation drives and programs which seek to help literacy classes, schools, low-income communities, libraries, book clubs etc. Last but not the least, you can support the endeavours of organizations listed under ‘Whom Can You Contact?’ section below.
